First you’ll greet Vienna, Austria’s capital where you’ll find grand museums, cobbled lanes and imperial palaces with beautifully tended gardens. You’ll enjoy an overnight stay on board here with time to stroll down gothic landmarks to the Spanish Riding School, with its famous Lipizzaner horses, seek out the city’s rich musical heritage or enjoy some delicious ‘Sachertorte’ in one of the many coffee houses.
Vienna is a treasure trove of culture with art galleries full of works by the Old Masters and a musical heritage that outshines most other cities. Composers including Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss, Brahms and Mahler were inspired by its baroque architecture, imperial grandeur and appreciation of the arts. During your time you could enjoy a concert in one of the city’s outstanding music venues, such as St Charles Church.
As Hungary’s former capital, birthplace of its first King and seat of the Hungarian Catholic church, Esztergom has played an important role throughout the country’s history. The famous Basilica towers over the city and you can walk around its imposing columns and up to the domed roofs, or take a stroll up to St Tamás Hill for beautiful views.
Here, you’ll enjoy another overnight stay to discover Budapest’s culture, fine cuisine and thermal baths. Whichever side of the river you choose to explore - Buda with its sweeping panoramas and quiet neighbourhoods or Pest with its thriving restaurants and nightlife - this is a city where the streets wear their history, both old and more recent, and you’ll find poignant memorials such as the Shoes on the Danube.
In the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava, you’ll find stunning fairy-tale castles with fascinating panoramic views across the river. This relaxed and compact city is easy to explore, especially the traffic-free Old Town, and rewards you with baroque architecture, charming cafes and plenty of live music. One must-visit location are the Devin Castle ruins, standing on a high cliff, looped with walking trails.
The glorious Wachau Valley greets you next, where vineyards and apricot orchards line the slopes and rugged cliffs hold looming towers, tiny villages and an air of mystery. You’ll sail to the small town of Melk, where small gardens wrap themselves around colourful structures, including Stift Melk, a Benedictine monastery perched high up on a hill.
